Vitamin C supplementation prevents
Developmental Bone Disease in large and giant breed dogs.
Vitamin C is important in the synthesis of collagen, which is
the most widely distributed tissue in the body. However, there
are no known dietary requirements for Vitamin C in dogs, as dogs
can synthesize their own Vitamin C from glucose in their liver.
Diets completely lacking in Vitamin C fed to growing puppies for
150 days had no adverse effects on their growth or skeletal
structures. Conversely, no advantage has been seen in scientific
studies when animals at risk for Developmental Bone Disease were
given high doses of Vitamin C through the growth stage.
