Reasons: Allergies

Feeding a homemade food to a pet can be a diagnostic and/or
therapeutic measure in cases of dietary sensitivity and food
intolerance. The prevalence of adverse reactions to food (including
food intolerance and food allergies) has been roughly estimated at
1% of all general dog and cat cases and is responsible for 10-20%
of cases of skin disease seen by veterinary specialists.
Although the real incidence is low, there is strong evidence
indicating that food allergies and intolerances do occur in dogs
and cats. Possible food hypersensitivity should be further
investigated when gastrointestinal and dermatological diseases
cannot be fully resolved with other standard treatments. Unfortunately,
examining pet food labels is rarely helpful in identifying the
offending agents. A dietary history is necessary in developing a
logical food plan and formulating a simple homemade diet for a pet
with food allergies.
