Reasons: No Commercial Diet Available

For a particular medical problem a therapeutic pet food may be
available, but either the product is not palatable to the patient or
it is not acceptable to the owner. Most therapeutic pet foods do not
come in a variety of flavors, and the ingredient formulation is fixed.
If the patient does not find the one flavor or formulation palatable,
the food may not be consumed in adequate quantities to support body
weight and condition. If none of the several available brands of
therapeutic foods is palatable to the pet, a homemade diet specially
formulated with a nutrient profile for the specific medical condition
may be the only alternative.
