Reasons: Desire To Cook
|
Some pet owners simply want to cook for their pets and are willing to
spend the extra time and money required for meal preparation. These
people have the time and interest to prepare the pets meal on a daily
basis.
Quite often, the pet is a geriatric animal with a slowly progressing
disease (renal or hepatic disease or cancer, for example) and has poor
appetite, body weight, and condition. Meal preparation and hand feeding
are means by which the owner participates in his or her pets
supportive care. A homemade food that approximates a balanced diet for
these pets is a very reasonable request.
Nearly all of the 52 million dogs and 64 million cats in the USA
consume some type of table food at some time in their lives, but the
vast majority of dogs and cats in the USA are fed a commercially
produced, complete, and balanced product and therefore receive 90% of
their calories from commercially prepared foods. In some European
countries, however, homemade foods supply an estimated 35% of the cats
with 60% of their caloric intake. Some pets are fed table foods
intentionally, on an occasional basis, but these foods are not of
concern when they comprise less than 10% of the daily food intake of
healthy pets. When the pet receives more than half its daily calories
from table foods, the whole diet should then be formulated to ensure
a proper nutrient intake.
