Micronutrients

Is a specific source of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) provided?

Supplements providing vitamins, microminerals, fatty acids, and specific nutrients can be obtained, although they may be cumbersome to feed and can add greatly to the expense of the pet’s food. There are, however, human adult formulations of vitamins and trace mineral that work well for both dogs and cats. These human formulations are also available with no sugar, preservatives, sodium, colorings, flavorings, yeast, or chemical solvents, which is helpful to pets with food allergies and intolerances.

Children’s vitamin/mineral products generally contain various flavorings, sugar, and colorings and are available in liquid form, but children’s products do not contain a large array of nutrients.

Presently, there are no veterinary supplements properly formulated for homemade diets as most veterinary formulations are based upon the assumption that the pet is eating a commercial pet food.
