Protein

What is the type and quantity of the primary protein source?

Dogs and cats have daily requirement for specific amino acids and not protein. Protein quality is a measure of the number and type of amino acids present. Any cooked protein source should provide the 12 or so essential amino acids required by the dog or cat.

Feeding muscle meats to dogs will meet most but not all of their amino acid requirements; likewise, feeding muscle meats to cats will rarely meet all of their amino acid requirements—there may be deficiencies of arginine, methionine or cystine, and taurine.

If an ovo-lacto vegetarian or vegan (no animal products) food is requested, proper formulation is more difficult but can be done for dogs and in some cases for cats. Proper formulation of a homemade diet can meet the essential amino acid requirements of your pet.
