Minerals
Minerals
are inorganic components of the diet, commonly reported collectively on pet food labels as ash. Animals do not have an ash requirement but do have dietary requirements for individual minerals.
Macrominerals
are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, magnesium, and potassium. These are called macro because they are required in relatively large quantities (grams per day) compared to other minerals.
Microminerals
are iron, copper, iodine, zinc, manganese, and selenium. These are called micro because they are required in relatively small quantities (micrograms or less per day).
There are minerals called
ultra-trace
such as chromium and boron; however, the minimum required by dogs or cats has not been determined. Based on the evidence in other species, chromium and boron should probably be included in their diet.
